Let's just say that they are the same game, except that in portal, you play from another perspective.

No they are not the same game.
Half-Life as a series has won a crapload of game of the year awards.(More then Portal) Has been named "The best PC game ever. Is the only game to receive an 11/10 from PC Gamer. Received a 96 from Meta Critic.(Portal got a 90) One of the only games to ever live up to it's hype.(Portal didn't really have any to speak of, and if it hadn't been bundled in the OB, it wouldn't be nearly as wide spread, or popular, once again you have HL to thank) Redefined the entire gaming industry, and is still impacting it today. And even though the original is ten years old, it can still take on the newest CoD or Halo, and win, by a lot. The only thing I can think of where Portal beats Half-Life is that GLaDOS was named the most influential character of the decade, where as Freeman and Alyx Vance were in the teens.
Yes I like Portal, I'm not saying I don't, but in my mind, and looking at the facts, Half-Life is better.

Doesn't portal use the same general mechanics and exist in the same universe?

So portal is just a subset of Half Life.
By game, do you mean story and goals? I was going by gameplay and attitude.

Actually, they have won at least as many awards, Portal is celebrated as the best PC game ever written, and it is the only game to end up on a COLLEGE READING LIST(this should prove it's better written and smarter, which is what counts in my opinion). I mean, the college reading list bit just makes it friggin obvious! It is sooooooo much better than any other shooter. And GLaDOS is also considered the greatest villain of all games. And the Queen of Snark.
Actually, Portal is the Queen of all games, ruling over the others with an iron fist of 'Oh No You Can't Get This Good Even In Your Dreams'.

Yes. And Portal is also the matriarch and therefore the supreme ruler. Like the queen of England, only effectual.

Strictly speaking, Portal doesn't quite count as a shooter, despite the gun. Um, wait, how can TWO games be celebrated as the Best PC Game Ever? ELEVEN OUT OF TEN. That's how amazing Half-Life is. The college reading list thing I didn't know; it's interesting. Half-Life honestly did redefine gaming. And owns CoD even today. Final word: As with playing cards, kings trump queens.

Um, no. Queens(it is queen because it has female characters who are-FYI- way cooler than most male characters) are just as great as kings.(sexist)And I don't care what PC gamer says, Portal is just too intelligent to be appreciated by most gamers. And being the only game to ever be admitted onto a college reading list is way more of an accomplishment than getting a good score. It means that it kicks literary butt. Now THAT'S cool. Besides, you know what?! Portal revolutionized it's own new genre. Oh, AND it is as great as it is, and it was built low-budget. Oh, AND all the team minus Eric Wolpaw were just out of college. Portal is so good, it beat the odds of being a disaster. This low budget college student project became amazing. Seriously now I really never want to see or play Half Life again. Great. Gaming experience down the toilet. Oh well. At least I've played VALVe's best.

Your mad at me aren't you. All I'm doing is talking about how I see the game, as you just did in your post, it's an opinion. Would it be reasonable to say that after reading your post about how great Portal is and how it beats HL that I never want to play or see Portal again? No, not really.

Are we still talking about videogames? I could write essays upon essays about Utena's depths (it is pretty deep; I'm not making this up) and comment on artistic points, but at the end of the day, it's just an anime that people have opinions about. I can't get a job or help humanity with it. It is just something I like and can watch when I get home.
((And I used Utena as an allegory because I can't relate to Half Life and Portal.))
